Summary

  • Joining the UW Product Management Club as a graphic designer and jumping roles to being a product desginer to now being the VP of design, I supported the team by designing, creating, and developing social media posts and initiating in re-branding efforts to help promote UW PM events and initiatives. I worked side by side with the marketing team to ensure the posts were aesthetically pleasing to convey important information to audience members. Right now, I am currently designing UW PM's website based on user needs and project specifications and are planning to launch the site by the end of April 2022!

Process

  • I attended weekly meetings to understand the needs of the team, and what was required in the social media posts. I worked to create the posts from scratch in Figma, considering branding elements that would be familiar with the UW PM brand while adding some new creative elements to keep the posts fresh and interesting.
  • During the re-branding efforts, I created logo designs through a series of iterations and polled the team to see which designs they liked. From that input, I took those ideas and began to narrow down the designs more and more until a final logo was reached.
  • Right now, I am designing the UW PM website based on user needs and project specifications. I am working with a tight knit group of developers, designers, and projects managers and am excited to launch the site soon!

Key Learnings

  • there are a lot of great product managers out there in the tech industry doing amazing work to help improve the lives of their users! Super exciting to see!
  • the importance of listening to users and paying attention to detail
  • refining my Figma and design skills to create visually pleasing social media posts
  • how to collaborate and communicate cross-functionally across teams of different specialties to meet deadlines

Improvements

  • organization of my working space in Figma for more clarity and conciseness
  • less is more! Some designs may be too complicated and difficult for the audience to digest
  • more consistency with designs to convey the UW PM name more efficiently
